Minor ailments and Head Lice services in Sunderland to stop

Schemes which have been running in Sunderland to let patients get medicines for minor illnesses for free without a prescription will stop at the end of April. The schemes which have been running for several years have been reviewed, and a decision was made that they did not offer good value for money for the NHS.

The schemes ran in 34 pharmacies in Sunderland but were not available to all Sunderland patients and there was not enough money to make the schemes available to more pharmacies.

Community pharmacies will continue to provide advice about the treatment of minor illnesses and recommend medicines for people. All medicines which were available on the scheme can be bought without a prescription and most of these are low-cost.

Sunderland CCG is part of the North East and North Cumbria self-care campaign which is promoting the use of over the counter medications where these are the most appropriate.
