First Smear, No Fear

Fri 06th December 2019

NHS Sunderland is piloting an exciting new campaign to encourage local women to have their smear test.

‘First Smear, No Fear’ will see local beauty salons offer discounts to women who’ve recently had their first smear. Practice nurse Jess McCabe initiated the scheme when she realised that the number of young women not attending their smear tests was on the rise. She says: “Younger women seem to be the ones who miss their smear tests and there are a lot of reasons for this; they might feel frightened or embarrassed but there’s no need to. It’s a very simple, quick procedure, and it shouldn’t be painful at all.”

The pilot will run at six GP practices in the Coalfields area – Hetton Group Practice, Herrington Medical Centre, Kepier Medical Practice, Houghton Medical Group, Grangewood Surgery and Westbourne Medical Group.

To claim your beauty discount, pick up a ‘First Smear, No Fear’ card in your practice reception, have your smear, get the nurse to stamp your card and head to any participating local salon.

Discount card available from your practice reception.
